What is Pitru Paksha

The fortnight

Pitru Paksha is the lunar fortnight dedicated to ancestors. Families offer tarpan, pinda, or hiranya shraddha for departed parents and forefathers, often led by the eldest son or appointed kartā. In Bengaluru, many households cannot travel to Gaya each year; they perform shraddha at home with a priest guiding mantras and sesame-water offerings.

What happens at home

Sessions may include sankalp, pitru tarpan with black til and water, pinda dana or symbolic rice balls, feeding brahmins or donating food per capacity, and closing prayers. Some days are general sarva pitru amavasya; others are specific tithis. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma prepares name lists in advance to avoid errors during emotional chanting.

This is ancestral worship, not a cure for living family problems and not a chart-reading product.

Practical city notes

Prepare clean white clothes, darbha, black sesame, rice, and cooked offerings as your elders direct. Apartment shraddha may use a balcony or community area for disposal steps—confirm local custom. Book early in the fortnight; mornings fill quickly.

See shraddha and tarpan at home on this site.

Names and records

Write pitru names in Devanagari or Roman script as your family uses them, with relationship labels (father, grandfather, mother). Bring death tithi notes if you observe annual shraddha—Pitru Paksha general days may still need that list for accuracy.

Keep a copy for next year; Bengaluru families often repeat the same priest when the list is already correct. Emotional days go smoother when paperwork is done before the pandit sits down.

Feeding and charity

Many families cook rice, kheer, or dal for brahmins or donate to temples per capacity. City life may shrink the feast but not the intention—discuss simple anna shraddha formats on WhatsApp. Charity outside the home should still respect the fasting window elders observe.

Pitru Paksha is not a time to launch property deals or wedding shopping in some households; that is custom, not something this page enforces. Focus on calm preparation and correct names.
