Tarpana / Hiranya Shradha at Home

तर्पण / हिरण्य श्राद्ध

The rite

Tarpana and Hiranya Shradha are ancestral offerings in which water, sesame, and darbha are presented to pitrus (departed forefathers) with Vedic mantras. Hiranya Shradha uses symbolic gold or dakshina when a full shraddha feast cannot be arranged, while tarpana focuses on libations that satisfy the ancestors on sacred days. Families in Bengaluru often combine both when a priest guides them through the annual tithi or during Pitru Paksha. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma conducts the vidhi at your residence in the North Indian tradition, with the samagri list shared on WhatsApp before the day. The worship is done in order at home; this page does not promise a particular outcome.

Time at the house: About 1.5–2.5 hours depending on number of pitrus and hiranya details

Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma does this at the house in Bengaluru. The fee is not printed on this page. It is sent on WhatsApp with the material list.

Why families book it

You may book tarpana with Hiranya Shradha when the yearly shraddha tithi falls on a weekday, when travel to a holy river is not possible, or when elders want the mantras recited correctly without a large community feast. Hiranya shraddha is especially common when time is short but the family still wishes to honour pitrus with proper sankalpa and offerings.

The ritual supports continuity between generations: naming the departed, offering til and water, and completing the priest-led portion with respect. It is worship and remembrance, not a guarantee of relief from grief or worldly problems. Pandit Sharma confirms whether your family line follows a combined tarpana–shraddha or a separate sequence based on gotra and local custom.

When families ask

  • Annual shraddha on the death tithi (pitru tithi)
  • Pitru Paksha or Mahalaya period ancestral days
  • After upanayana or marriage when elders advise pitru tarpana
  • When a full anna shraddha is delayed and hiranya form is acceptable
  • Amavasya or designated pitru days in the family calendar
  • Before starting major griha events if elders request pitru santushti
  • When returning to Bengaluru and missed the tithi elsewhere

Questions

What is the difference between tarpana and Hiranya Shradha in one visit?

Tarpana is the water-and-til offering with mantras to pitrus. Hiranya Shradha is a compact shraddha form using symbolic gold or dakshina when a full feast shraddha is not performed. Pandit Sharma can sequence both in one sitting when your elders approve.

Do we need the exact death tithi to book?

Yes, for annual shraddha the lunar tithi (and often paksha) should be confirmed from family records or a panchang. If you are unsure, share whatever elders remember; the pandit helps verify before the day.

Can daughters or sons perform as kartā?

Tradition varies by lineage and whether a male heir is present. Many Bengaluru families have the eldest son as kartā; in some cases daughters or wives perform with priest guidance. State your family situation on WhatsApp when booking.

Is this done only during Pitru Paksha?

No. The annual tithi shraddha is the main occasion, but tarpana can also be done on other pitru days your family observes. Pitru Paksha is simply the most common cluster of bookings.

What should we wear and eat before the ritual?

Kartā usually wears clean traditional clothes and follows fasting or restricted diet as elders advise until the main offerings are complete. The pandit will confirm on WhatsApp.

Do you bring all materials?

The family arranges items from the WhatsApp list—til, darbha, vessels, and hiranya items. The pandit brings mantras and procedure; some families supply everything locally in Bengaluru.

How far in Bengaluru do you travel?

Home visits are arranged across Bengaluru and nearby areas within roughly a hundred kilometres. Share your locality when you message to confirm the visit.
